Who We Are

The Alliance of Calgary Community Ethnic Support Society (ACCESS) is a government registered non-profit organization formed in 2015 by a group of concerned citizens in the City of Calgary.

The founding president is Dr. Thomas Cheuk. Working alongside other dedicated volunteers, Dr. Cheuk is very passionate about providing a safe and healthy environment for our future leaders (youth) and seniors within our communities, and is a strong believer that a growing community needs to work collaboratively and with unity so that we can all achieve our common goals and be proud of it.

The vision of the Alliance is to provide a platform to empower the various service providers in Calgary to work together for the betterment of our diverse ethnic communities. It envisions an inclusive and supportive society, regardless of individual political and religious beliefs, where Calgarians of all ethnic origins have full and equitable access to all aspects of Canadian society. It is intended to be a visible hub, easily accessed by all members of our communities.

What We’ve Done Since 2015

Since its inception, the organization has been actively engaged in various activities in the community, most notably with safety initiatives such as graffiti removal, an environmental initiative such as bottle and clothing recycling, and community street cleanup. More recently, ACCESS, through its community partners, provided youth leadership training and wellness response programs in support of Calgary students, with the formation of the first Chinatown Toastmaster Club.

During the pandemic, the Alliance of Calgary Community Ethnic Support Society, along with other community organizations, delivered hundreds of packages of rice and other culturally-appropriate food products to Calgary seniors in need, and to pandemic-affected frontline workers in Brooks.

Alliance Support

Working closely with other non-profit organizations in the City of Calgary, ACCESS delivers its programs in partnership with the Calgary Chinese Community Service Association (CCCSA), the Calgary Korean Arts Club, the Japanese Cultural Group, the Calgary Chinese Community Service Society, the Calgary Chinatown Lions Club, the Oi Kwan Foundation, the Asian Heritage Foundation, the Chinatown Business Improvement Area (CBIA), the Chinatown Development Foundation, the Calgary Chinatown Seniors’ Centre Foundation, the Chinatown Community Association, and the Access Lions Club. It is an alliance of the major service organizations in Calgary’s ethnic communities.
